1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

[ translate ]

Chassis No. 9114400413
Engine No. 6342004
Transmission No. 7347513
Manufactured in February 1974, this Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe was part of the first model year of the newly restyled impact bumper 911s making their way to Porsche's most important market, the United States. Ordered as the top-of-the-line Carrera model, it featured a 2.7-liter air-cooled flat-six engine under its iconic ducktail with performance upgrades over the 911S including larger anti-roll bars (20 mm front, 18 mm rear), Bilstein sport shocks, a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 6x15 (front) and 7x15 (rear) forged aluminum Fuchs wheels. MSRP for the Carrera was a hefty $13,575 before optional extras were added. Not shying away from the options sheet, the original owner of this Carrera ordered it in Orange paint over a Midnight leatherette interior with fog lights, air conditioning, tinted glass all around, and Bilstein shock absorbers. Delivery, according to the original service book, occurred on 19 April 1974 with 5 miles on the odometer via Leroy Cannon Porsche / Audi of Greenville, South Carolina. Judging by the high degree of originality this Carrera still exhibits, it is highly unlikely that the original owner was tearing up the local racetracks in his new 911!
Treated as the special road car it is, the consignor notes it had accumulated approximately 22,000 miles upon his family's acquisition in the mid-1990s whereby it entered the world-famous Brumos Collection. Rarified air for any vintage Porsche, joining the Brumos Collection with its “Best-of-the-Best” attitude employed by the Snodgrass family was a difficult task, and it is only natural that such a highly-original, special example of an already rare car would be granted entry. Over the next 20 years, this 1974 911 Carrera Coupe could be viewed on display at special events like the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in 1998 where it won “Best Roadgoing Porsche” and occasionally on the showroom floor by many on a pilgrimage to the most famous of all US Porsche dealerships. Occasionally this unrestored example left the collection to best represent how a Carrera from 1974 was constructed, with a notable highlight being its inclusion in Rennsport Reunion II's “40-Years-of-911” display proudly representing its model year.
By 2016 this matching-numbers Carrera left the Brumos Collection, entering the collection of the consignor, Harris Snodgrass. Returning the car to the street, it was sent to David Glenn in Palm Coast, Florida for an engine out mechanical refresh. Over the course of several months the mechanical systems, including fuel, CIS injection, and brakes, were gone through while the engine and transmission were removed and received a cleaning, fluid changes, and adjustments. Approximately 1,000 miles have been added to the car since the completion of the work with its VDO odometer displaying 25,732 miles at cataloging. A three-time entrant to The Amelia, most recently in 2023 in the “Porsche 2.7 Carrera” class, it emerged victorious this year, winning Best in Class at the concours d'elegance against a number of highly-regarded Carreras with the hard-to-impress judges noting that the unrestored originality set it apart from its competitors.
