1979 Porsche 911 Turbo

Chassis No. 9309800885
Known for its lack of restrictions on engine power and aerodynamics, the Cam-Am racing series provided an ideal venue for Porsche to experiment with turbocharging. Partnered with Penske Racing, Porsche definitively conquered the Can-Am championship in 1972 with George Follmer behind the wheel, and again in 1973 with Mark Donohue driving with turbocharged variants of the 917 racer. Using lessons learned from motorsport, Porsche subsequently employed turbocharging for the first time on a serial road model with the Type 930. Introduced at the 1974 Paris Motor Show, the 911 Turbo featured a 3.0-liter flat-six engine fitted with a single turbocharger, flared wheel arches to accommodate wider wheels and tires, upgraded suspension, and a “whale tail” rear spoiler. Zero to 60 mph occurred in less than six seconds on the way to a 155 mph top speed — figures few other cars of the period could match.
While early 1975-1977 models were fitted with a 3.0-liter engine, significant upgrades arrived in 1978. The most substantial development was a gain in displacement to 3.3-liters and the addition of an air-to-air intercooler which yielded 265 hp at 5,550 rpm and 282 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm in cars exported to the United States. Other changes included a redesigned rear spoiler and further uprated braking and suspension systems. Porsche claimed improved performance figures with a 0-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds, a 13.5-second quarter-mile, and a 162 mph top speed.
One of 806 US specification models built for 1979, this 911 Turbo is finished in 601 Moonstone over a dark brown leather interior. Equipped with the standard four-speed manual transmission, optional extras specified included a limited-slip differential, sport seats, electric sliding sunroof, passenger-side mirror, stone guards, and Turbo side lettering. Specially ordered by Alan R. Crebo of Kokomo, Indiana in January 1979 from Giganti Porsche-Audi located in Indianapolis, Indiana, this 911 Turbo is understood to have been painted in the truly rare and almost luminescent hue of Moonstone. It is understood that Mr. Crebo and his wife Dottie were inspired by Apollo 11 astronaut (and the first man to walk on the Moon) Neil Armstrong, and had also attended Purdue University, Mr. Armstrong's alma mater.
A file of historical maintenance receipts clearly illustrates the care and attention lavished on this car from new. Mr. Crebo would cherish this 911 Turbo until 2019 when it was sold into current ownership. In February 2020, this 911 Turbo was sent to well-respected marque specialist TLG Auto in North Hollywood, California for a thorough mechanical recommissioning including rebuilding the 911 Turbo's engine with a K27 turbocharger and SC camshafts for enhanced drivability, rebuilding the transmission, repairing the wiring harness, installing a new clutch assembly, and refreshing or replacing worn steering and suspension components. According to the consignor, additional maintenance work completed by TLG more recently in 2023 included overhauling the HVAC system.
Presenting beautifully throughout, this 911 Turbo displays 42,812 miles at the time of cataloging, which is believed to be accurate and original, and is understood to wear the majority of its factory-applied finishes with the exception of the windshield cowl. Supplied with its original stamped maintenance book, spare tire, jack, records, and purchase and service documentation, this well-loved 911 Turbo is quite possibly the sole example painted in Moonstone, a color made available for the 1979 model year only.
