19c Negoro lacquer netsuke MONKEY TRAINER
Early 19th century lacquered wood netsuke of yawning and stretching sarumawashi - traveling monkey showman - with his pet climbing onto a cloth sack on his back. Unusual posture (both hands holding onto his ankle), extremely well carved strong piece with great detailing - see his teeth and knot of the sack. Beautiful wear consistent with age, deep himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. Wood is lacquered in Negoro style - red lacquer over black, so as it wears the black and then wood starts showing, thus adding yet another color to the piece. Height 1 3/4 inches.
