Provenance: Circa 1850s oil on canvas painting of a woman (mother or teacher) with a young child seated on her lap. The child is studying a book which clearly depicts the letters "A B C D E F" across the top of the pages. Small flower bud vase sits on table in background. Housed in a pine frame with a birds-eye maple veneer and a gold color liner. Original brass hanging loop on top of frame. CERTAINLY A CLEAN PAINTING OF A TOUCHING SUBJECT MAKING IT BETTER THAN A SIMPLE PORTRAIT. only one knot hole appears in the entire frame and stretcher causing me to attribute this painting as of American origin (european pine by this period was so over-timbered that it was difficult to secure wood without knot holes). Painting was found in western Pennsylvania. Exterior frame dimensions are approximately 15-1/2" X 13-1/2". Exterior dimensions of actual painting and stretcher are approximately 12" X 10". frame is joined at corners with square nails and the canvas is attached to the stretcher with square nails. Condition: light scuffs, patina and bumps to frame. missing one wooden wedge or "key" on upper left back of stretcher. painting was professionaly lightly cleaned with three small patches added on back (easily seen in the photos) and corresponding inpainted spots on the front making this piece ready to hang on the wall.
