19th C. Australian Aboriginal Wood Throwing Stick

Oceania, Western Australia, Aboriginal peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden throwing stick meant for hunting rather than for display. The wide body is barely curved near the top and has rounded tips on either end. The obverse face displays dozens of fine burnishing marks, and the verso has a flat surface with an incredibly smooth texture. Aboriginals made tools and airfoil weaponry like this example from a variety of different woods known for their high density and sturdy construction. Size: 2.4" W x 28.2" H (6.1 cm x 71.6 cm); 29.25" H (74.3 cm) on included custom stand.
