19th C. Azande Slave Trade Carbon Steel Knife

North Central Africa, Azande (plural Zande), second half of 19th century CE. An incredible weapon presenting an extremely long carbon steel blade with a steel coil wrapped wooden hilt, and a pronounced crescent shaped tip. Scholars believe that Azande weapons like this were likely used to catch victims sold during the slave trade. An intriguing piece, not only for its form but also for its history. Size: overall length 35" L (88.9 cm); blade measures 29.5" L (74.9 cm); crescent tip measures 8" L (20.3 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in the late 1990s; ex-private Texas, USA collection
