19th C. Burmese Gilt Wood Nat Spirit w/ Glass Inlays

Southeast Asia, Burma (present day Myanmar) or Thailand, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A gilded hand-carved wooden angelic figure, perhaps a winged Nat spirit, with a ribbon or sash billowing around the neck and behind the shoulders and another flowing around the waist, between the legs, and behind the calves, both skillfully rendered with scrolled floral vines delineated in bas relief, and embellished with mirror and red glass inlays, including three rosettes on the scarf billowing over the chest and behind the arms. Nats are spirits worshiped in Burma (Myanmar) in conjunction with Buddhism. Size: 12.375" W x 14.5" H (31.4 cm x 36.8 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in the 1990s; ex-Anamally collection, Portland, Oregon, USA

Condition Report: Hardware/chain was added to the back for suspension/display purposes. Repairs to one end of lower ribbon/sash. Losses to hands and one foot. Surface wear with scuffs/losses to gilding. Perforation through lower ribbon presumably for attachment. Losses to rosette inlays as shown. Recess at naval may have once contained inlay as well. A few fissures/nicks to other glass inlays.
