19th C. Chinese Qing Gilt Wood Figural Panels (pr)

[ translate ]

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful pair of wood panels, each of rectangular form and intricately carved with an openwork scene of 2 figures engulfed in a complex vegetal motif and adorned with lustrous gilding. The figures in the first panel both wear long pants and tunics with billowing sleeves as they stride in opposite directions and turn to look at one another. On the right, the taller figure wears their hair in a top knot and carries a lengthy garden tool atop their shoulders, while the shorter figure on the left wears a wide-brimmed hat and gestures at the taller figure, as though waving goodbye. Alternatively, the other wooden panel features a figure resembling a Boddhisattva on the left, shown standing with characteristic elongated ears, lengthy robes, and a crown while holding a book and gazing at a petite figure that stands opposite him. This figure holds out a platter containing a vessel, as though serving the divinity. Size (both about the same size): 14.6" L x 6.3" H (37.1 cm x 16 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
