19th C. Dutch Brass Mortar - Heinrick Ter Horst

Western/Central Europe, The Netherlands, Dutch, ca. 19th century CE. A fine mortar cast from brass that is constructed in the distinct style of early 17th century Dutch mortars, this style in particular from the Heinrick Ter Horst manufacturer. The inverted, bell-shaped mortar has a pair of elephantine handles projecting from the walls, a flat base, and a flared rim. The lower body displays a low relief register of birds among leafy vines as well as a program of slender tulips, and displayed on the rim exterior are the words, "Heinrick-Ter-Horst Me Fecit Anno 1607." Fine patina covers both the interior and exterior surfaces. Size: 7.625" W x 5" H (19.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

Condition Report: Original pestle missing as shown. Slight bending to overall form of rim, with abrasions and softening to some finer exterior details, and light encrustations within basin, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout.
