19th C. Indo Persian Steel Trident Lance w/ Wood Shaft
Central Asia, Pakistan and northern India, Indo-Persian culture, ca. 19th century CE. A fine example of a forged-steel lance with a wooden shaft inserted into the conical socketing shaft, a dense triangular midsection, and a thin head with a straight central prong flanked by a pair of gently wavy prongs. The base of each trident prong displays a petite etched flower, and the main body bears densely etched foliate motifs enveloping an abstract cruciform emblem in the middle. The trident (known as a trishula) is an incredibly old symbol of power and authority in Hindu mythology and is believed to have been used to sever the original head of the elephant god Ganesh. Condition Report: Minor abrasions to wooden shaft and trident head, with softening to some finer etched details, slight bending to overall form of trident prongs, and nicks to wooden shaft, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
