19th C. Indonesian Iron Kris w/ Wooden Sheath

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. late 19th century CE. A lovely example of a kris (keris), a traditional Indonesian ceremonial sword. The handle is carved from a chestnut-hued hard wood and boasts a pair of abstract anthropomorphic masks carved along the interior curve. A small, hemispherical brass separation disc rests between the handle and the blade guard. The iron blade has a straight, tapering profile with a pointed guard and undulating integral bands of lighter material. The sheath is hand-carved from hard wood with a wide guard protector and a slender profile. The sheath is covered with a copper-alloy jacket which is open on one side and bears incised foliate and lattice motifs along the open sides. Size: 19.625" L x 5.875" W (49.8 cm x 14.9 cm); length of blade: 15.375" L (39.1 cm).

Condition Report: Repair to tip and small losses to peripheries of interior wooden sheath lining. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, minor nicks to blade edge, light tarnishing and fading to incised motifs on copper-alloy jacket, and some abrasions to sheath. Light earthen deposits throughout.
