19th C. Indonesian Wood, Steel, Brass & Silver Kris

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fabulous example of a kris (keris), a type of personal ceremonial sword. The curved handle is carved from espresso-hued hardwood and features a pair of abstract anthropomorphic masks along the interior curve. The brass spacer disc rests between the handle and has ten faceted glass cabochons inlaid around the circumference. The carbon-steel blade has a straight profile with a projecting hand guard, deep grooves along each side of the shoulder, and sharpened edges. The wooden sheath is composed of three parts and exhibits an almost-pure silver (99.4%) jacket with dense foliate motifs in repousse. Size (w/ sheath): 6.5" W x 19.9" H (16.5 cm x 50.5 cm); length of blade: 15.1" L (38.4 cm); quality of silver: 99.4%.

Condition Report: Old repair to sheath components with light adhesive residue along break lines. Slight bending to overall form of blade, minor abrasions to blade, handle, and sheath, with softening to some raised details on sheath jacket. Nice patina to wood, brass, and silver components.
