19th C. Japanese Edo Period Brocade Obi

East Asia, Japan, late Edo period, 19th century CE. Breathtakingly beautiful, a long brocade obi - a sash made for a traditional Japanese kimono. The brocade is comprised of gold and silver threads as well as vibrant persimmon orange, olive green, purple, tangerine orange, royal blue, black, and white threads. This very long obi presents an intricate yet harmoniously balanced pattern featuring cranes, chrysanthemums, persimmons, pine and kiri leaves, clouds, and more. This gorgeous Japanese geisha obi sash was created to be worn wrapped around and securing a formal kimono used for ceremonial wear. It is two-sided with the same patterned brocade fabric on both sides and is long, wide and stiff. The obi is of very high quality and quite heavy, weighing just under four pounds.
