19th C. Marquesas Islands Stone Pounder

Oceania, French Polynesia, Marquesas Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pounder likely used for pulverizing taro root into poi, hand-carved from porous stone of a pale-grey hue. The tool has a tapered conical handle, a stocky body, and a convex pounding face. Known locally as a "Ke'a Tuki Popoi," pounders like this example are some of the most important tools in Polynesia. Size: 3.5" W x 6.75" H (8.9 cm x 17.1 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
