19th C. Moro Steel & Wood Kris w/ Decorative Blade

Southeast Asia, Philippines, Moro people (also Bangsamoro), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely example of a steel kris of the Moro style, featuring a wavy steel blade with engraved floral motifs on its upper part. The handle is carved dark wood with a zoomorphic, avian form as its pommel; below that, the narrow part of the handle is wrapped with decorative brass bands. The upper part of the blade features decorative shaping including a face with a brass band wrapped around it cut out in profile on one side. Fierce weapons like this one were used by the Moro people in the Philippine-American War to fight American soldiers; they were also used to fight the Japanese during World War II. Size: 4.2" W x 25.75" H (10.7 cm x 65.4 cm)
