19th C. Moroccan Fassi Ceramic Lidded Jar, ex Museum

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large wheel thrown Fassi style pottery lidded jar known as a jobbana, glazed with a stunning blue-on-white patterns and embellished with brass rims, knob, and foot fittings. The lovely geometric and stylized motifs that resemble scrolling foliage are painted in a deep cobalt blue on a white ground and are influenced by Islamic art and Chinese porcelain. The bowl has a ring foot and a bell-shaped lid with a finial knob, that fits flush within the rim. Hammered sheets of brass are adhered to the exterior edges as nice accents and protective covers. The jobbana vessels were traditionally used for churning milk, but later became serving containers for soup, especially during celebrations and serving guests and family at Ramadan. The base is marked "FES:R." Size (w/o lid): 6.2" W x 4.7" H (15.7 cm x 11.9 cm); (w/ lid): 6.5" W x 8.9" H (16.5 cm x 22.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition Report: Minor nicks and abrasions to lid and body, with light fading and smudging to pigment in some areas particularly within basin and lid, and light nicks to bottom of foot, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina to brass sheets, and great preservation to blue pigment in most areas. The word "FES:R" is painted beneath the foot.
