19th C. Northwest Coast Cedar Double Bowl w/ Eyes

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, probably Haida, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved red cedar, double bowled vessel of an overall rectangular form with a dividing wall down the center, skillfully painted with eyes of sacred animals on both ends in red and black. Traditionally, wooden vessels were used for storing and serving water and foodstuffs. Hot stones could be added to cook the contents. Although vessels like this were traditionally used throughout the Pacific Northwest, those that were painted rather than carved were usually made by the Haida people. A double bowled vessel like this is quite unusual to come by. Size: 14.75" L x 6" W x 2.5" H (37.5 cm x 15.2 cm x 6.4 cm)

Condition Report: Age cracks and losses to peripheries and inactive insect wear/loss as shown. Some fading to the painted eyes on either side, but they are still discernible.
