19th C. Northwest Coast Nootka Wood Ritual Bowl

[ translate ]

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Nuu-chah-nulth people (Nootka), ca. 19th century CE. A fascinating wooden bowl, made to be used in healing rituals. Carved from a dark, hard wood, the bowl itself is shallow and ovoid, with a flat base. The handles which extend from either short end are in the form of heads - one completely bald, the other with a short coiffure that reaches to the neck. Each face has rich details - large, almond-shaped eyes, a wide nose, and a large mouth with teeth visible. The faces here are similar to those recorded by Europeans during Captain Cook's third voyage as they made contact with the Nuu-chah-nulth people along the coast. Size: 2.25" L x 5" W x 9.95" H (5.7 cm x 12.7 cm x 25.3 cm); 11.75" H (29.8 cm) on included custom stand.
