19th C. Philippine Ifugao Wood Bowl - Duyu

Southeast Asia, The Philippines, Northern Luzon Island, Ifugao tribe, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful bowl known as a "duyu," carved from finely grained hardwood with a flared base, a hemispherical body, and a deeply-scalloped rim that may have held a lid at one time. The duyu is a vessel of ceremonial significance that was drank from by high-ranking members of society. Each wide scallop along the rim is used as a 'mouthpiece' for drinking rice wine, and bowls like this example are primarily used during rice wine festivals. A fine example enveloped in lustrous coffee-hued patina! Size: 9.75" W x 3.9" H (24.8 cm x 9.9 cm).
