19th C. Philippino Painted Wood Crucifix w/ Silver

[ translate ]

Southeast Asia, Philippines, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful piece of devotional art, this is a carved wooden crucifix decorated with extensive silver additions. Christ wears a hand-crocheted modesty skirt and his body is painted to demonstrate the gruesome effects of the crucifixion. His head hangs to one side, with his facial features sensitively carved. The cross is carved from wood, but silver - ranging from 92-60% pure - forms ornaments all around it. A blazing sun form is behind the center, with the "INRI" plaque above Christ's head superimposed on the upper sunbeams and also made of silver. A silver skull is at Christ's feet and silver caps the arms and upper end of the cross with large leaf-like flares. Two silver grape vine votives hang from the arms. A stunning piece of devotional art! Size: 13.55" W x 17.55" H (34.4 cm x 44.6 cm)

The figure of crucified Christ has been central to Christianity, and especially Catholicism, for centuries, representing his humanity through his suffering and death. In "The Crucified God: A Death in Pictures" (Los Angeles Review of Books, 2017), religious scholar Ed Simon writes, "A crucifix is holy because it does not look holy. A crucifix is holy because it tells a truth. A crucifix is holy because it does not sanitize, clean, erase, obscure, or deny the trauma – or the majesty – of being a human, even if that human happens to be God." Areas that became Catholic under the Spanish Empire particularly venerate the crucifix.
