19th C. Shipibo Polychrome Bowl w/ Linear Motifs

South America, Upper/Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Peru, Shipibo peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely hand-built pottery bowl of a squat form exhibiting a planar base, a gradually widening lower body beneath a carinated midsection, a tapered shoulder, and a thin rim surrounding the basin. Covered in cream-hued pigment, the vessel bears a dense series of brown and red linear motifs with some thicker lines traversing amongst the slenderer lines, all at geometric angles; the thicker bands are capped with red-painted rectangles. Size: 8.75" Diameter x 4.25" H (22.2 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Doctor's collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s
