19th C. Sudanese Mahdist Period Steel Thrusting Spear
Central Africa, Sudan, ca. 1890s CE. A fascinating weapon, a steel spear with twin barbs at its base, a long, thin tang, a narrow socket cast as a separate piece, and a thin wooden pole. Spears of this type were used by Mahdist forces - the followers of the Muslim rulers of Sudan who the British army defeated at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. Size: 1.45" W x 51.25" H (3.7 cm x 130.2 cm)
