19th Century French Paul Sormani Cylinder Writing Desk

19th century French Paul Sormani cylinder writing desk in walnut Offered for sale is a 19th century French walnut miniature cylinder writing desk with brass mountings and a tooled leather writing surface. The Tambor cylinder automatically opens when you pull the drawer open. The upper writing surface pulls forward to reveal storage below three small drawers. The desk is supported by tapered fluted legs with brass capitals and brass feet. Paul Sorman (1817-1877) was born in Lombardy, Venice. A master cabinet maker, Sorman specialized in reproducing styles of the Louis XV and XVI. His career flourished and upon his death, his studio was named 'Veuve Paul Sormani & Fils' as it was taken over by his widow, Ursule-Marie-Philippine Bouvaist, and their son, Paul-Charles Sormani. After merging with Thiébaut Frères in 1914, the business continued until 1934.
