19th Century Sampler in the Style of Ashley Down Orphanage Bristol, worked in the familiar red threads creating detailed motifs, alphabet and numbers through the tiny stitches, worked by Jane Ann, dated 1871, using the Bristol Orphanages format for the differing fonts of the alphabet and also the motifs, including a bible, a standing cow, birds, crosses, keys, stars, fleur de lys, Greek key motif, other geometric and naturalistic designs, some of the numbers were believed to be either the bed numbers of other orphans, or Jane could be acknowledging some of the others girls for helping with her sampler or borrowing their patterns, 26cm by 27cm For reference see Lot 2111 Tennants Auctioneers 25 August 2018
. Unframed. Some staining to the backing cloth, couple of stitched repairs to the back of the cow and to the KL on the top border, it has a couple of areas of 'white marks/paint' to the edges of the cloth.
