2 porcelain dishes with classic decor inspired by the story of The Judgment of Paris. China approx. 1750, 23 cm diameter, intact. The story behind The Judgment of Paris is as follows: At the wedding of Peleus to the Nereid Thetis on Olympus, Eris, the goddess of strife, placed on the table a golden apple with the inscription: "for the fairest!" The goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite all claimed to be entitled to the apple. When they could not agree, Zeus appointed the Trojan prince Paris, who lived on Mount Ida, as the arbiter. Three goddesses approached him with Hermes. Paris, however, could hardly decide. All three seemed equally beautiful to him. Hera then tried to persuade Paris by promising him the greatest wealth and dominion over all Asia. Athena promised him great war victory and deep wisdom. Aphrodite finally praised him as the most beautiful youth of Phrygia, who should also have the most beautiful woman on earth. She promised him that she would help him win the love of the most beautiful woman on earth, Helena, daughter of Leda and wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta. Carried away by Aphrodite's seductive promises, Paris finally gave her the golden apple. From that time on, Hera and Athena would be bitter enemies of the Trojans. (1 dish 2 chips)
