Grand entrances have rarely been as dramatic as the reintroduction of the Maybach nameplate in 2002. After crossing the Atlantic aboard the Queen Elizabeth II encased in glass on the first-class sun deck, it was delicately lowered, by helicopter, at its port of destination arrival – New York City. From there, the new world-standard for luxury, quality, and automobile design reached its final destination, its world premiere in the Regent Ballroom at the New York Stock Exchange. Upon debut, the Maybach raised the very peak of what a passenger car was expected to be. At the same time, it gave new meaning to those legendary Maybach motorcars that defined elite international automotive engineering during the 1920s and 30s.
The Maybach 57, is so called to reflect the length of the automobile in meters, 5.7 to be exact. The inside of the 57 is an exceedingly elegant place to reside. It exudes serenity from the highest quality materials hand-crafted and fitted with attention to detail not possible in mass production. Among them, up to 210 individual leather parts and more than 100 exquisitely crafted and hand-fitted items of fine wood trim go into making the Maybach cabin. Powering this masterpiece of automotive engineering is a specially developed twin-turbocharged “M285” Type 12 5.5-liter V12 producing up to 543 horsepower and an astounding 664 lb-ft of torque.
Finished in Rocky Mountains Light Brown Metallic over a Grand Nappa California Beige full leather interior, this example from 2004 benfits from very light use, less than 33,000 miles, and just two owners from new. An exceptionally costly car in 2004, many standard features aboard the Maybach 57 were unobtainable at the time, even luxury Mercedes-Benz of the era, and this 57 is a prime example with special leather, front and rear seat climate control, heated steering wheel, proximity-controlled cruise control, and Keyless Go. A refrigerator resides between the rear seats for the fortunate rear occupants sitting in seats resembling those in the first-class cabin of an intercontinental jet plane. As rare as it is impressive, the Maybach 57 continues to live up to Wilhelm Maybach's famous dictum, “To create the very best from the very best.”
