San Francisco, CA - $5 1870 Fr. 1136 The First National Gold Bank Ch. # 1741 PCGS Extremely Fine 40. A truly extraordinary National Gold Bank Note, this example is one of the highest grade pieces in private hands. It's pedigree goes back to a 1986 Kagin Sale, where it was offered grading Extremely Fine, and continues to Lyn Knight's Dallas 2002 Sale, where it was graded as Extremely Fine+. It now resides in a PCGS holder, and has been graded by them as Extremely Fine 40, a grade we are in absolute agreement with. The colors are as good as they come on any National Gold Bank Note. The all-important coin vignette on the reverse is well defined and sharply printed. Of equal significance, it has managed to avoid the splits, tears, and other issues that afflict many of the surviving National Gold Bank Notes.
