THE FISKER KARMA
Looking very much like the latest offering from BMW, which is hardly surprising given its designer Henrik Fisker's background with the German company, the Fisker Karma was a brave attempt by a start-up manufacturer to take on the automotive superpowers in the race to build a high-performance electric passenger car. Electrically-powered cars have been recognized as the way forward for some years now, which explains why investors were willing to stump up the several million US dollars required to fund Fisker and his business partner Bernhard Koehler's bold vision. The Karma was first shown as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2008 and some three years later was ready for production, its appearance little changed. The first cars were delivered in the USA in July 2011.
Boasting a spaceframe chassis and body of aluminum, the Karma is a range-extended plug-in hybrid driven by a pair of 120kW (161 horsepower) electric motors that receive power from a 20.1kWh lithium-ion battery or the engine-driven generator. Supplied by A123 Systems, the battery pack runs down the center of the car between the four seats. Once the battery is depleted, or when the 'Sport' paddle on the steering wheel is activated, the front-mounted GM Ecotec 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine powers a generator that sends electricity directly to the drive motors, which are the only power source mechanically connected to the rear wheels. The battery can also be charged from the grid. Typically, of electric vehicles, the transmission is single speed affair. The two electric motors produce a combined output of 403bhp and a staggering 981 lb/ft of torque, giving the Karma a top speed of 125mph (201km/h) and a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of 5.9 seconds in Sport mode. Depending on the driving conditions, some 50 miles could be covered in all-electric mode before the petrol engine kicks in. Sadly, production ceased in 2012, Fisker having been crippled by its battery supplier's bankruptcy, and the rights to the Karma's design were eventually sold to the Chinese Wanxiang Group.
THE CAR OFFERED
Finished in a wonderful Blue metallic with Tan/Brown leather interior, this rare Karma EV was sold new in the United States, has had only one owner from new, and currently displays a total of only some 1,761 miles on the odometer. The car is in generally very good condition, given the extremely low mileage figure.
The interior is finished in a two-tone leather combination with minimal wear and in excellent condition. 22-inch alloy wheels finished in silver with black Brembo calipers sitting behind. Having lived on the east coast its entire life, this Karma has been cared for and is in near new condition. Likely one of the lowest mileage Fisker Karma's available, this example deserves a close look. Surely a wonderful opportunity to own a groundbreaking Hybrid EV performance sedan penned by one of the greatest automotive designers.
