20th C. African Ogoni Wooden Mask w/ Articulated Jaw

West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden face mask with slender cheeks, a petite nose, tab-shaped ears, slit-form eyes, a rounded forehead, and pursed lips, all beneath a dish-form coiffure containing an egg-shaped finial. The white-painted mask is accentuated with applied black pigment on the eyes, philtrum, jaw, and coiffure. The jaw articulates via a pair of tight leather straps and has a row of wooden teeth attached along the interior. Size: 5.125" W x 6.875" H (13 cm x 17.5 cm).
