20th C. African Tuareg Steel Dagger w/ Leather Sheath

Northern Africa, region of Libya, Algeria, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, Tuareg (also Twareg, Touareg, Berbers, or Tamashek language speakers), ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fine dagger made from forged steel with an elongated triangular profile bearing a pair of shallow fullers on each face between the sharpened edges and pointed tip. The tang is wrapped with a conical steel plate with incised crosshatch motifs just above the blade, and the conical wooden pommel creates a comfortable handle. The form-fitting leather sheath is reinforced at the shoulder with a belt loop on the verso, and two slender grooves course down the back. Size (w/ sheath): 1.6" W x 14.2" H (4.1 cm x 36.1 cm); 16.6" H (42.2 cm) on included custom stand; (blade): 9.2" L (23.4 cm).

Provenance: private Glendale, Arizona, USA collection, collected from the 1970s to 2000s

Condition Report: Very slight bending to overall form of blade and sheath, with minor abrasions to blade, handle, and sheath, loosening to bottom of sheath with losses to original thread, and minor pitting to blade. Nice patina throughout.
