20th C. Alaskan Haida Carved Wood Panels w/ Ravens (pr)

Native American, Northwestern United States, Haida, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful matching pair of hand carved wooden wall panels featuring stylized ravens. The panels are ovoid with relief carvings of the matching birds on the frontside. The ravens are in profile with long, curved beaks and large eyes prominently displayed. The wings are pressed to the sides, legs are bent, and the talons are opened wide. The surface is painted in hues of red, green, black, and white. In Haida culture, the raven is a trickster and powerful creature with mythical an ability that symbolizes creation and transformation. The panels have integral suspension cords on the verso and are engraved with the mark and initials for "BT," an unknown artist. Size: 16.35" L x 11.5" W (41.5 cm x 29.2 cm)

Condition Report: Fading and chipping to pigments and wood. Stable pressure fissures. Surface scuffs and abrasions. Motifs are clear and retain much of their pigments. Both have cords for suspension.
