20th C. Bornean Iron, Rattan, & Wood Working Axe

Southeast Asia, island of Borneo, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-crafted utilitarian axe, used for clearing the dense jungles of Borneo. It features a sharp iron blade that slots into a notch in the wooden handle and is held in place with woven rattan. The wooden handle has a short butt to provide counterbalance to the axe head. It also features a raised bamboo lower end wrapped in decorative rattan at its upper terminal. Size: 9.75" W x 23.5" H (24.8 cm x 59.7 cm)
