20th C. Indonesian Wood, Brass, Silver & Steel Kris

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely example of a kris (keris), a type of personal ceremonial sword. The handle is carved from hardwood of chocolate and caramel hues and exhibits a pair of abstract anthropomorphic faces along the interior curve. A cupped brass spacer cap is inlaid with eight red and white faceted glass cabochons and rests between the handle and the blade. The carbon-steel blade has a straight profile with a pointed hand guard, sharpened edges, and a line of raised text on either side. The wooden sheath is composed of three parts and is fitted with a silver (87%) jacket which boasts dense foliate, linear, and stippled motifs in repousse. Size (w/ sheath): 6" W x 18.5" H (15.2 cm x 47 cm); length of blade: 14" L (35.6 cm); quality of silver: 87%.

Condition Report: Wooden sheath reassembled with light adhesive residue along break lines. Sheath jacket is removable. Slight bending and light oxidation to blade, minor abrasions to handle and sheath, with softening and slight bending to sheath jacket. Nice patina throughout.
