20th C. Mexican Painted Folk Art, La Cruz de las Animas

Latin America, Mexico A free-standing, vibrantly painted wood carving representing a folk art interpretation of "La Cruz de las Animas" or "The Cross of Souls", presenting a rich religious iconographic program. At the center is Christ on the cross, flanked by a pair of animas solas (meaning lonesome departed ancestral souls) figures - on the base. Both are hoping for salvation while awaiting judgement amidst the flames of purgatory surrounding them. A wonderful example of religious art representing a subject that was a popular cult of devotion throughout Mexico during the 19th century. Size: 11" W x 16.75" H (27.9 cm x 42.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired in 1990

Condition Report: Jesus' left arm reattached. Crack to right arm as shown. Slight surface wear with a few scuffs as shown but pigmentation and details are generally still strong. Overall very nice.
