20th C. Northwest Coast Haida Wooden Fish Club
Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Canada, British Colombia, Haida Gwaii, Haida people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden club of a stocky form used for pounding fish once pulled out of the water. The handle end has a gently corseted form with a knob-shaped pommel end that facilitates grip, a thick midsection, and a bulbous beating head. A narrow suspension hole is drilled laterally through the end of the handle, and the entire club is enveloped with coffee-hued patina. Size: 14" L x 3.25" W (35.6 cm x 8.3 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection, acquired between 2008 and 2010 from the sister of Haida Argillite carver Glen Pollard, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada
