20th C. Papua New Guinea Painted Wood Shield
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. mid 20th century CE. A large wooden shield with an overall rectangular composition, terminating in a curved point. Relief-carved details form a symmetrical design on one face - repeated concentric diamonds and horizontal lines. These may represent mythical creatures who are often the subjects of similar shields. Pale red details are against a cream background, with the straight edge of the shield - which is not carved - painted as a solid black bar. The back of the shield features two raised vertical bars, used for holding. Size: 10.3" W x 39.1" H (26.2 cm x 99.3 cm)
Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired between 2005 and 2010
