20th C. Swiss Iron & Brass Cow Bell - Treicheln

Central Europe, Switzerland, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A cast-iron cowbell known as a treicheln. The brass-covered bell presents with a broad shoulder surmounted by an arched handle and a tapered body with the original iron hammer suspended inside. Bells like this example were affixed to attractive leather straps and collars worn by bulls as a means of protecting a family against evil and bestowing luck upon its members. Size: 5.25" W x 4.9" H (13.3 cm x 12.4 cm)
