Copper Engravings from Civitates Orbis Terrarum
Three hand colored copper engraved city view maps from the 6 volume publication, "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (published 1572-1617), edited by Georg Braun and engraved by Franz Hogenberg. The series contained 546 city views and maps from around the world, each of the 3 maps are complete facing pages. 1) Titled at the top "Oriens," depicts a volcano scene with fields below, titles on the reverse, "Forum Vulcani, Leandro Sulfuraria, vulgo Solfataria," in Latin; free floating in frame, glass on both sides. 16.75 in. high x 21 in. wide. 2) View of Alhambra and the city of Granada with 3 close up views below, titled "Amoenissimus castri Granatensis, vulgo Alhambre dicti, ab oriente profpectus" (castle of Granada, commonly called Alhambra, view from east). Plate no. 67, free floating in frame. 16 in. high x 20.75 in. wide. 3) View of the city of Grodna, lower left reads, "Vera Designati, o Vrbis in Lit, Tavia Grodnae." Backed on cardstock, 14.5 in. high x 21.25 in. wide. Unknown printing dates, images appear early and in good condition showing plate marks and vibrant color. Weight: 13 lbs.
