Sir Isaac NEWTON (1642-1727). [Three works with links to Newton: edited by…; admired by; wrongly attributed to Newton]. 1681-1722.

1.Bernhard VARENIUS (1622-1650). Geographia Generalis, in qua affectiones generales telluris explicantur, summâ curâ quam plurimis in locis emendate [edited by Sir Isaac Newton]. Cambridge: John Hayes, 1681. Octavo (7 x 4 1/2in; 178 x 114mm). Pp. [i-xxii], 1-511, [i]. Title in red and black and with woodcut printer's device, 5 folding engraved plates. (Title a little soiled). Contemporary calf, later lettering-piece to spine (extremities, particularly the spine, rubbed, spine also chipped at the head, endpapers replaced). Provenance: Richard Goodwin (early signatures); Druce Donation (two ink-stamps). The second edition published in England, edited by Newton. 'The Geographia generalis established a framework for physical geography capable of including new facts of discovery as they arose. The work became the standard geographic text for more than a century' (DSB). Babson 252; Wing V107.

2.[Thomas BURNET]. Telluris Theoria Sacra: orbis nostri originem & mutations … Libri Duo Priores de Diluvio & Paradiso. London: typis R. N[orton]. impensis Gualt. Kettilby, 1681. 2 parts on one volume (as issued), small quarto (8 x 6in; 203 x 153mm). Pp. [i-xvi], 1-138, [139-144]-306, [i-ii advertisement]. Front blank, general title and title to second part. Numerous engraved illustrations, two double-page plates. (Some spotting). Early mottled calf, spine gilt (damage to spine [see images], hinges split but cords holding). First edition of the first two parts of Burnet’s Theory of the Earth: admired by Sir Isaac Newton. There are two separate issues dated 1681, though this is not recorded by Wing and no priority has been established. The present work conforms to ESTC R6547 (collating: A4 a4 B-2Q4 2R2), with an initial blank and final advertisement leaf. Some copies previously offered for sale call for an engraved frontispiece, but this is only noted in the collation for ESTC R200980, which has different pagination and is a different setting of the text. These first two parts were reissued in 1689, with the addition of two further parts on the ‘Conflagration’ and ‘Millenium’.Wing B 5948; Norman 375 ("Burnet felt the need to place the Biblical account of the creation upon an intellectually respectable foundation. Cartesian physics supplied the mechanics of geologic change for Burnet's theory".

With Tables for Purchasing the Leases of Land or Houses according to several Rates of Interest, very Necessary and Useful for all Purchasers, but especially for them who are any way concerned in Church or College Leases. The second edition. To which is added, The value of church and college leases consider’d: And the Advantage of the Lessees made very Apparent. London: printed for J. Wyay, 1722. 2 parts in one volume, octavo (7 1/8 x 4 3/8in; 182 x 112mm). Pp. xvi,[2],29,[1],26 (without the final advertisement leaf). First leaf with a printed recommendation from Newton, dated ‘Sept. 10. 1685’, general title, title to the second part. Some spotting). 20th-century calf-backed marbled paper-covered boards.
