36 Moche Copper / Bronze Tupus, Amulets, Finials + Tumi

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Piura region, Moche or Vicus culture, ca. 400 BCE to 600 CE. This is a fabulous assortment of 36 copper, bronze, and copper alloy implements, effigies, pins, tumis, mace heads, and other cast ornamental items. The 3 mace heads are tubular sockets ringed with pointed spikes, ideal for ceremonial use. The 4 appliques are in zoomorphic serpentine and crouching rabbit forms - these perhaps once formed dangling ornaments for a mask or headdress. There are 11 miniature figurines of zoomorphic creatures: bird, deer, llama head, monkey, and several lords or warrior figures with staffs, flute, and axe- all may have been protective amulets. The rest of the collection includes a spherical bell that still emits sound, 6 tupu pins, and 1 tumi knife, and 10 pieces of copper beads, rings, or finial knobs that could have been parts of vessels, masks, or jewelry. Size (longest tupu): 7.5" L x 0.75" W (19 cm x 1.9 cm); (smallest bead): 0.5" L x 0.35" W (1.3 cm x 0.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private St. Petersburg, Florida USA collection; ex-old private collection, Germany, since early 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
