3rd C. Sassanian Glass Vessel Applied Dots

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East, Sasanian (Sassanian, Sasanid) Empire, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A striking example of glass artistry from the last Persian empire before the rise of Islam during a crucial period in history. The body of the vessel presents a globular form with a short neck rising to a flared rim with a rolled lip. An ensemble of slightly-concave roundels is applied to the exterior of the body creating an attractive, minimalist pattern, and the entire vessel sits upon a base made from a slightly larger roundel. This type of vessel would have been used to hold perfume or other precious liquids that otherwise would have been subject to evaporation. Note that the original color of the glass is a yellow-green hue; however, a nice layer of weathering film imbues the vessel with attractive peach hues. Size: 2.3" W x 3" H (5.8 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Dere family collection, NYC, NY acquired in the 1980s/1990s.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#154133
Condition Report: Minor nicks to some applied elements and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice weathering film throughout.
