Bowie Knife Marked J.D. Chevalier, New York. Approximately 16 3/8-inches overall with a 10 1/2-inch clip point blade. Ricasso marked J.D. CHEVALIER / NEW YORK. Nickel-silver crossguard of ovoid form with ball finials. Handle of stag composition, repoussé style silver ferrule and pommel cap. [handle possible replacement, later addition]. Contained in silver mounted leather sheath. Note: One of the best known American makers of bowie knives, Chevalier's main business was the manufacture of dental instruments. He produced a large number of knives marketed to those headed to the California Gold Rush, circa 1849. Condition: Fair to good. Blade showing wear, areas of pitting and minor sharpening.
