5 Roman Brass & Bronze Medical Implements

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $500**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An interesting collection of 5 bronze and brass medical instruments, some with decorative handles. The assorted implements include a spoon with a knob finial, a lancet, and then three tools with two uses: a scoop with a pestle at the opposite end, a spatula with a scoop, and a spatula with a pestle. All were used in preparing medicinal remedies from herbs or other ingredients. Roman surgical instruments were very similar to those described by Hippocrates in the 5th century BCE and Galen in the 2nd century CE - in fact, several of their tools are like ones that were in use until the 20th century! Size of largest: 6.375" L x 0.375" W (16.2 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
