Gustave Jean Jacquet (French, 1846-1909) La danse, Château de Kerduel, Comte de Champagny Oil on canvas 32-1/4 x 25-3/4 inches (81.9 x 65.4 cm) Signed lower left: G. Jacquet PROVENANCE: Christie's, London, July 12, 1968, lot 43; Doyle, New York, May 11, 1989, lot 46; Mainichi Auction, Tokyo, October 12, 2013, lot 817; Acquired by the present owner from the above. In addition to his genre portraits of pretty women, Gustave Jacquet specialized in painting meticulously observed costume pieces, often set in actual locations. In the present example, Jacquet's eighteenth-century gathering is taking place on the grounds of the Château de Kerduel, in Pleumeur-Bodou, Brittany. Constructed between the 12th and 19th centuries, the castle, according to legend, once served as lodging for King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. The name of the castle, Kerduel, is thought to have derived from one of King Arthur's own castles, Carduel (Carlisle).
