6th C. Frankish / Ostrogoth Bronze Fibula

Western/Central Europe, Franks or Ostrogoths, ca. 6th century CE. A beautiful bronze fibula or brooch with a crescent-shaped head topped with five radiating knobs. The arching central bow joins the head to the lozenge-shaped lower section which has six petite nodules protruding from the peripheries. Within both the upper and lower sections are intricate curvilinear filigree patterns that create a wondrous presentation. The verso still retains its original pin clasp where the tip of the original pin would have rested within. Size: 1.4" W x 2.5" H (3.6 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Crescent head reattached to top of bow with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Original pin missing as shown. Slight bending to overall form, with light encrustations within some recessed areas, and nicks to some radiating knobs and areas of lower body. Nice patina throughout.
