74068: An American Silver Covered Tureen Attributed to

[ translate ]

An American Silver Covered Tureen Attributed to Bigelow, Kennard & Co., Boston, circa 1875 Marks: HENRY T. BROWN, 30, PROVIDENCE, 925 STERLING 13 x 10 x 13 inches (33.0 x 25.4 x 33.0 cm) 2551 grams The covered tureen, with monogram MHN centered to body. Howard Brown was a retailer and did not make this tureen. Another example that differs only by it having a different final was made by Bigelow Kennard & Co. of Boston who likely made this tureen as well. Although Howard Brown was allied with John Gorham and Gorham Thurber in the 1850s and 1860s, he was a retailer and did not produce silver. Henry T. Brown & Co. was in business from 1875-1880, and apparently ordered the silver he sold from makers other than Gorham. This tureen is marked with the model number "30" and several other identical are very similar tureens bearing the "30" model number are know. One is marked by Bigelow Kennard & Co. ich suggests that Brown may have been supplied with model 30 tureens by Bigelow Kennard & Co. Another closely-related tureen marked with a "40" model number was sold (made?) by Shreve, Crump & Low. Another tureen identical to this one and also marked by Howard T. Brown is dated December 10, 1872 which suggest he might have been selling on his own earlier than 1875. Howard Brown was a retailer, not a silversmith, so the identity of the maker of this piece has been a mystery for years. Luckily, I finally located a near identical tureen marked model 30 AND Bigelow, Kennard & Co. That Boston firm did make silverware and probably supplied this tureen to Brown who asked that his name be stamped on it. Sneaky Mr. Brown. CV
