A Reed & Barton Silver-Plated Covered Tureen, Taunton, Massachusetts, circa 1873 Marks: MF'D & PLATED BY REED & BARTON, 2629, 16, DESIGN PAT. AUG. 12, 1873 11-1x2 x 12-1x2 x 10 inches (29.2 x 31.8 x 25.4 cm) The oval-form tureen, designed by George Gill, with cast seated line finial applied to raised ribbed dome of conforming cover, the body with short neck, flared rim, sharp shoulders that taper towards base, and two applied curved handles with articulated open loops. Molded floral band to neck, Japanese-inspired geometric and foliate diaper work to body, molded floral motifs to legs. Similar model (object number 1989.46.A-B), donated to the Dallas Museum of Art by Faith P. Bybee in honor of Dr. Venable, described and illustrated in Dr. Venable's book, Silver in America: A Century of Splendor (p. 190, fig. 6.57). A few museums, including the Dallas Museum of Art, have tureens like this one because they illustrate how sophisticated American silverplate can be. In 1873 the Japanese aesthetic decoration covering the walls of this tureen was at the height of fashion. CV
