˜Ⓐ AN OTTOMAN SHORTSWORD (YATAGHAN), LAST QUARTER OF THE 17TH CENTURY AND THREE FURTHER OTTOMAN SHORTSWORDS (YATAGHAN), TURKEY AND NORTH AFRICA, 18TH/19TH CENTURY the first with broad single-edged blade formed with a shallow fuller over the greater part of its length on each face, with traces of an inscription and a stylised sword motif (areas of rust), engraved silver hilt including slender down-curved quillon with foliate terminal (the other quillon missing), and a pair of ivory grip-scales (one chipped) formed with a slender eared pommel and set with hardwood rondels and minute brass nails; the second with early curved blade widening at each end (pitted) and marine ivory grip-scales with eared pommel; the third with curved broad single-edged blade (pitted), with traces of an inscription on one face, horn grip-scales (incomplete), in a brass-mounted leather-covered scabbard; and the fourth with curved fullered blade formed with a scalloped back-edge towards the tip, and spirally fluted horn grip-scales
