A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN 'PHOENIX' CHARGER, MING DYNASTY
China, Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Painted in underglaze blue of an appealing dark tone, the interior with a central roundel enclosing a phoenix and several surrounding medallions with floral designs as well as scrolling clouds and flowers on an elaborate grid-like ground, the exterior with stylized flowers and scroll designs.
Condition: Old wear and firing flaws, such as kiln grit and open glaze bubbles, fritting to trim, a larger chip to the rim (ca. 9 x 3 cm) with material filling and touchups.
Provenance: From an old family collection in Pressburg, Austrian Empire, Slovakia, and thence by descent to the present owner.
