A BRONZE TRIPOD INCENSE BURNER, CHINA, LATE 19TH CENTURY, of compressed globular form, with raised twin handles, on three short supports, decorated with three vignettes of figures, inscribed to the base 'Miss White, LL.D. / From Lady Blake / A remembrance of Sir Henry A. Blake G.C.M.G', marked XUAN DE. 15cm wide across handles, 14.5cm high Sir Henry Arthur Blake was born in Limerick in 1840. He served as a British Colonial administrator for a number of years, which included postings at the Bahamas, Queensland and Jamaica. In 1898 he was appointed Governor of Hong Kong and then went on to be Governor of Ceylon. He returned to Ireland when he retired and lived out his remaining years in Youghal, Co. Cork.
